| Description | The composition of cement roofing tiles is similar to that covered under Cement Plaster, except that the tiles are moulded and coloured with an oxide pigment such as red iron oxide etc. New tiles are not normally painted since they are already coloured. If they are painted it is because the owner wishes to change the colour for aesthetic reasons.
Cement tiles are usually painted after several years weathering by which time the tiles will have lost a little of their colour brightness. Before painting the tiles it is essential to check whether the surface is sound. If there is any powder present or the tiles are friable, treat the surface as a "chalked surface". Weathered tiles are very absorbent (and contoured). This would mean a significant reduction in the spreading of a product such as Permoglaze Acrylic Roof Paint.
Note: New unpainted cement roofing tiles may contain a mould release oil on the surface from manufacture. It is imperative that this oil is completely removed |
