The guide details of ASBESTOS (FIBRE) CEMENT

Description:Made basically from fibre and cement and used for making a wide variety of goods including flat and corrugated sheets, roof tiles, rain water gutters, etc. Asbestos cement has been used for more than 70 years. It has high alkali content with a rather variable surface texture. It tends to retain water for a long period. While alkali resistant emulsion paints are ideal for painting asbestos cement, they should never be used as a priming coat under enamel paint. This is because they are permeable and will allow the passage of alkali solutions, which will damage any enamel paint applied over them. The preferred emulsion paints for asbestos cement surfaces are Permotop Acrylic Emulsion MS 3, Permoglaze Flexible Acrylic(pure acrylic types) or Permoglaze Matt emulsion(styrene acrylic type). They may be directly applied to the asbestos cement even if the surface is slightly damp. Permoglaze Permolith also performs well. See "PLASTER".

Paint:(New asbestos cement) EXTERIOR The surface may be damp, but not wet. Enamel systems are not recommended. a) Matt Finish (Roofs) Permoglaze Acrylic Roof Paint b) Matt Finish (Facia boards, gutters etc) Permotop Acrylic Emulsion MS3 or Permglaze Permolith Note: No primers required for the above systems. (Well weathered asbestos cement) Fibre cement roofs which have been allowed to weather for several years may have become chalky or powdery or have mould or lichen present. These roofs may need special attention before painting. See "CHALKING SURFACES", "MOULDS AND ORGANIC GROWTH".
